When You Don’t Know What to Do

If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him.

At times, we all find ourselves needing to make a decision and not knowing what to do. Behaving emotionally is not the right answer, because that usually makes any situation worse.

When you are unsure about which direction to take, the first thing to do is to ask God for wisdom and acknowledge Him in all your ways (Proverbs 3:6). Trusting that God will guide you often leads you to a place of needing to step out and find out what will work.

Understandably, you would like to be sure you are right before taking action, but in my experience, that rarely happens. I normally have to work with God to find the right course of action to take. I take a step in a direction and see if it works. If so, then I take another step, and then another, until I know if I am on the right path.

If I take a step in one direction and it doesn’t work, then I simply step back, pray and think some more, and then try another direction when I feel the time is right.

Don’t be discouraged if you try something and it doesn’t work. That’s often the only way you will ever know the right thing to do. When you carefully try different options, you quickly find out which choices to eliminate—and that ultimately leaves you with the right one.

Prayer of the Day: Father, I believe that You guide me in making decisions, but I also know that faith requires me to step out and find out. I ask for the confidence to step out and not be afraid of making mistakes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
