Recent Election Sparks Violence in Kenya
In the wake of their recent presidential election on December 27, the African nation of Kenya has spun into chaos with rioting and ethnic fighting taking the lives of more than 800 people and driving up to a half million more from their homes.
The fighting began after President Mwai Kibaki was re-elected to office—an election that has been disputed. The outcome elicited widespread outrage and ignited tribal violence between the Kibaki tribe—led by the president—and the opposing Luo tribe. Since that day, hundreds have been brutally murdered, and the country has literally been torn apart—with miles of railroad tracks uprooted, telephone poles chopped down, and government offices burned to the ground.
Our Response to This Crisis
Through the support of our friends and partners, Joyce Meyer Ministries has partnered with Nairobi Lighthouse Church to offer lifesaving assistance to hundreds of families who have been displaced by the violence.
Thousands are fleeing from danger in the hotbed areas to cities like Jamhuri, where camps are being set up by the Red Cross and other relief organizations. It’s places like these where our teams are delivering literally tons of supplies and vital necessities like tents, mattresses, blankets, clothing and hygiene items. For nearly 50 families, we are providing packages containing a month’s worth of supplies.
We are also in the process of helping to set up a relocation camp for approximately 400 children who have been displaced after a children’s home in Kibera was destroyed. And at all of these camps, we are not only providing for their physical needs, but our teams are offering the love, support and spiritual help so desperately required during a crisis like this.
And that’s not all. Through our partnership with New Life Homes, we are assisting a network of children’s homes, churches and schools throughout the country, which are providing humanitarian relief and even functioning as transit points for those en route to safer areas.
What You Can Do to Help
First and foremost, we ask that you pray for this nation in need. James 5:16 says, …The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available…. And we agree. We ask you to please pray for all of the families who are homeless and in desperate need of physical and spiritual assistance…and for God to help bring a peaceful resolution to all of the violence and conflict in Kenya.
Second, it is your incredible support that allows us to take part in relief efforts like these. If you would like to make a donation to help support our ministry to Kenya, as well as our other vital outreaches worldwide, please click here.
Friends and partners, thank you so much for all of your love, prayers and support, which allow us to offer a hand of hope to those during crisis situations. Because of you, we are able to respond at a moment’s notice, bringing humanitarian relief and the love of God to those who need it the most.
