On January 17-20, 2008, nearly 1 million people flocked to the open-air Festival of Life crusade in Mumbai, India, to see Joyce Meyer.
In the span of 4 days:
- 1 million people listened to Joyce share the Word of God
- Over 400,000 people gave their lives to Christ
- 30,000 pastors and lay people attended daily leadership sessions
John Vijay Ray was just one of over a million people who attended the open-air night sessions.
“Though we are grown-up people, we are like little children,” Ray says. “Yes, Joyce Meyer is a wonderful lady of God. I'm praising how God is using her. What she preaches she practices by taking care of the homeless and the poor.”
Pearl Baptista came to the crusade with her two teenage daughters.
“Here in India women are held down,” she says. “But Joyce Meyer is empowering women. She is showing us, ‘If I can do it, you can do it in the strength of the Lord.’”
But the 4-day crusade was just the beginning.
A Plan for Changed Lives
David L. Meyer, CEO of Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions, shared his multifaceted strategy to reaching the people in India.
“At the end of the day, we want to reach people however we can,” David says. “Yes, these big events help to open a lot of doors. But when we can surround the crusades with television outreach, personal discipleship, and humanitarian outreaches, this is how we can really transform lives.”
Hand of Hope Provides a Safe Haven
In a quaint, rural setting 2.5 hours from Mumbai, 4 sparkling whitewashed buildings with red tile roofs gleam in the noonday sun. This is Joyce Meyer Ministries’ brand-new Prem Kiran Transformation Center. It will be the refuge and home for 30 former prostitutes and 100 children.
Inside these buildings you can find clean bunk beds, white walls and desks. Here the children receive an education, food and shelter. Women get job training. And it is here they learn about the Gospel and learn how to pray and worship God.
Scott Norling, the director of Joyce Meyer Ministries’ Asia headquarters says,
“I’m a great believer in the need to connect people relationally…and that’s how we'll establish the church in India.”
