Hope Cambodia: 30 Days of Hope

This past summer, from July 14 to August 12, 2007, Joyce Meyer Ministries launched Hope Cambodia: 30 Days of Hope, the most aggressive outreach we have ever undertaken.

A nation of 14 million people, Cambodia is still recovering from the grip of unimaginable fear. After living in the shadow of a genocide that took place in the 1970s, when more than 2 million people were brutally murdered, Hope Cambodia brought exactly what this country needed—hope and courage in Jesus Christ.

We partnered with more than 15 churches and highly effective ministries to make this incredible outreach a reality. In all, more than 800 volunteers traveled to Cambodia for this event.

During our weekend kickoff in Phnom Penh, Hillsong London led thousands of people in worship at the Chenla Theater, followed by a powerful message on worship by Pastor Gary Clarke.

More than 6,000 attended the opening, where people worshipped in the presence of God. And this was just a taste of what was to come.

Throughout the 30 days, we also held 3-day festivals in the cities of Battambang, Kampong Thom, and Kampong Chan. Each festival exceeded our expectations with a total of more than 120,000 people coming to experience services filled with anointed worship and teaching from God’s Word.

In addition, we had the opportunity to distribute more than 120,000 of Joyce’s books, printed in the Khmer language, free of charge.

Entire Generation of Doctors, Gone
Here in Cambodia, the need for health care is alarming since the genocide took the lives of many doctors and health care professionals. In fact, the average life expectancy is only 49 years old.

Through our free medical and dental clinics, we treated more than 9,000 people, not only bringing healing to their physical bodies but also introducing so many to the Healer Himself.

Partnerships to Train Leaders, Teach Children
One of the highlights was the dedication of the first official Hope Center in the remote village of Arng. We are so excited about these Hope Centers because they will be the catalysts for so much ministry throughout their communities.

First, most will serve as orphanages where children at risk can live in safety. In addition, they will also serve as churches, schools and even as feeding sites, which will provide meals to thousands of children and their families each month. In all, we opened 15 new Hope Centers while in Cambodia.

We also partnered with so many other organizations to accomplish so much over a relatively short period of time:

We teamed up with Prison Fellowship to distribute gift bags—containing hygiene items and a Joyce Meyer book—to more than 10,000 prisoners.

Through John Maxwell’s program Million Leaders Mandate, we had the privilege of training 700 attendees who will then go on to train a total of more than 6,000 other leaders.

In partnership with Focus on the Family and Logosdor, we trained a total of 1,500 children’s workers and also provided them with valuable resources to help them teach and train the beautiful children of Cambodia.

Local Government Tries to Stop Crusade
One of the most powerful and memorable nights of Hope Cambodia came toward the end of our outreach as Joyce’s 3-day festival in Phnom Penh got underway. The government intervened and turned off the power to all the lighting and sound at the venue…but it didn’t stop our team.

Christian music artists Delirious? and Hillsong’s Darlene Zschech continued to lead thousands in worship, and Joyce still preached the Gospel on what turned out to be a truly historic night for the people of Cambodia.

Friends and partners, through your support, in just 30 days we were able to minister to more than 160,000 people in a nation still hurting and still recovering from one of the worst atrocities in recent history.
